How to Download YouTube Videos in 1080p

Most people who are disappointed with a downloaded YouTube video picked the wrong option rather than hitting a technical limit. Here is how to get a file that looks the way it did in the player.

Copy the video link

Use the Share button under the player, or copy the address straight from the bar. Both the full youtube.com/watch?v= form and the short youtu.be/ form work.

If you are copying from a playlist, strip everything after the video ID so you do not accidentally fetch the wrong entry.

Choose the right line in the list

Paste the link and you will see a list of available formats. Pay attention to two columns: the resolution and the file size. For a given video, 1080p should be meaningfully larger than 720p. If two entries show the same size, one of them is mislabelled upscaling.

Why 1080p is sometimes handled differently

Above 720p, YouTube generally stores the picture and the sound as separate streams. A downloader has to fetch both and join them into one file. That is why a 1080p download can take a moment longer than a 720p one — it is doing more work, not stalling.

If you ever end up with a silent video, you have downloaded a video-only stream. Go back and pick an entry that lists audio as well, or use the merged option.

Which format to keep

MP4 is the safe answer. It plays on every phone, every TV, and every editor without conversion. WebM files are often slightly smaller at the same quality but are fussier outside a browser.

Audio only

For podcasts, interviews and music, the MP3 option gives you a far smaller file. There is no quality benefit to downloading the full video and extracting the sound yourself afterwards.

When the highest option is only 720p

Not every video is published in 1080p. If the uploader never provided a higher resolution, no tool can invent one. Check the quality menu in the YouTube player itself — whatever is the maximum there is the maximum that exists.
