How to Save Videos from X (Twitter)

· john26real How-To Guides

X has no save button of its own, so the link-and-paste route is the only way to keep a clip.

Copy the post link

Tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link. On desktop, open the post on its own page and copy the address.

Either x.com or the older twitter.com form works. Everything after the question mark is tracking and can be trimmed.

Videos inside threads

If the video sits several posts deep in a thread, make sure you copy the link to that post and not the first one. Tapping the video itself to open it full-screen, then backing out, usually gives you the correct post to share from.

For quote posts, the video may belong to the quoted post rather than the one you are looking at. Open the quoted post directly and copy its link.

Paste and download

Drop the link into the box at the top of this page. You will see the available resolutions. X stores several versions of every upload, so there is usually a genuine choice rather than a single file.

GIFs are not GIFs

What X displays as a GIF is actually a short silent MP4 looping on a timer. Downloading one gives you an MP4 with no audio track, which is expected rather than a fault. If you specifically need an animated GIF file, you will have to convert it afterwards.

Why some clips max out low

X caps upload resolution, and older posts were capped lower than current ones. If the best option offered is 480p, that is the highest version stored — the original was never kept at a higher quality.

What will not work

  • Protected accounts, where posts are only visible to approved followers.
  • Posts that have been deleted, even if you still have the link.
  • Age-restricted content that requires a logged-in session.
